What is Access Point Name (APN) ?

An Access Point Name, or APN, is a gateway between your mobile network and the internet. Think of it as the address book entry your phone reads when it wants to connect to a carrier’s data services. Without a correct APN, your phone cannot figure out which server to talk to, and your connection fails.

The APN includes the network identifier, authentication details and routing instructions. Carriers preload these details onto SIM cards, so most users never need to touch them. When something goes wrong, though, knowing what an APN does saves time and frustration.

Why the APN Matters

A misconfigured APN can cause:

  • No mobile data connection even with full signal bars
  • MMS failures, where picture messages refuse to send or download
  • Slow or intermittent internet access
  • Higher costs if roaming settings are incorrect
  • Inability to use certain carrier features like VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling

The APN is particularly important when you bring your own phone to a new network, use an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) or travel internationally with a local SIM.

  • APN – The core network identifier provided by the carrier (for example, “internet” or “phone”).

  • Server – Rarely used now. Usually blank.

  • MCC (Mobile Country Code) – A three-digit code for the country (for example, 234 for the UK, 310 for the US).
  • MNC (Mobile Network Code) – A two- or three-digit code identifying the specific carrier within that country.
  • Authentication Type – Determines how the phone proves itself to the network. Usually set to PAP, CHAP or none.
  • APN Type – Defines what this APN is used for. Common values are “default” (internet), “mms” (picture messages), “supl” (location services) and “dun” (tethering). You can combine them, such as “default,supl,mms”.
  • APN Protocol – Specifies IPv4, IPv6 or both. Most modern carriers support IPv4/IPv6.
  • Bearer – Defines which radio technologies the APN works over. Leaving it “Unspecified” covers LTE, 5G and others.

You rarely need to fill every field. In most cases, the carrier provides a short list and the rest stay on their default values.

How to Find Your Current APN

The exact steps depend on your phone’s operating system, but the general path is similar.

Android (varies by manufacturer and version):

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet or Connections.
  3. Select Mobile network or SIM cards.
  4. Choose your SIM if you have more than one.
  5. Tap Access Point Names.
  6. You will see a list of APNs. The active one usually has a filled circle or checkmark. Tap it to view details.

iPhone (iOS):

Carriers often lock APN settings on iPhones. If your carrier allows editing:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Mobile Data or Cellular.
  3. Tap Mobile Data Network or Cellular Data Network.
  4. The fields appear directly.

If you do not see the option, your carrier restricts manual APN changes. In that case, a carrier settings update or a new SIM usually fixes issues.

Setting Up a New APN on Android

When you need to add a custom APN, for example after inserting a travel SIM or switching to a smaller provider, follow these steps.

  1. Go to the Access Point Names menu as described above.
  2. Tap the plus (+) icon or Add.
  3. Enter the details exactly as provided by your carrier. Pay special attention to the APN, MMSC and APN type fields.
  4. Leave any fields not specified by the carrier blank or at their default value.
  5. Tap the menu (three dots) and select Save.
  6. Go back to the APN list and select the new entry to activate it.
  7. Toggle mobile data off and on, or restart the phone, to force the new settings to take effect.

Pro tip: if you are using one APN for both internet and MMS, make sure your APN type includes “default,supl,mms”. Some carriers require a separate APN for MMS, in which case you create two entries and select the correct types for each.

Setting Up a New APN on iPhone

If your iOS version shows the Mobile Data Network menu:

  1. Open Settings then Mobile Data and Mobile Data Network.
  2. Under Mobile Data, fill in the APN, username and password if required. Most of the time only the APN field needs a value.
  3. Scroll down to the MMS section. Enter the APN, MMSC, MMS Proxy and MMS Port exactly as provided.
  4. Leave everything else blank unless the carrier gives specific instructions.
  5. Tap back and toggle mobile data off and on.

When the APN settings are hidden, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, wait a few moments and the phone may automatically download the carrier settings. If that fails, contacting the carrier or visiting a store is the quickest path.

Common APN Problems and Fixes

No internet after a carrier switch

Check that you have selected the correct APN. Remove any old, incorrect APN entries so your phone does not accidentally default back to them. Restart the device after saving.

MMS not sending or receiving

Open the APN settings and verify the MMSC, MMS Proxy and MMS Port fields. A single wrong character can block MMS. If your plan uses a separate MMS APN, confirm it exists and the “APN type” is set to “mms”. Also ensure mobile data is turned on, because MMS requires a data connection even on plans with unlimited SMS.

Data works but browsing feels slow

Check whether the APN protocol is set to “IPv4” only when your carrier supports IPv6. Switching to “IPv4/IPv6” can improve performance. Also confirm no proxy is filled in unless the carrier explicitly requires one.

APN settings are greyed out or missing

On many phones, especially locked or carrier branded models, the APN menu may be inaccessible. A software update or a SIM swap from the new carrier often resolves this. If you bought the phone from a carrier and later unlocked it, sometimes a factory reset (after backing up) is needed to release the settings menu.

Roaming data is not working

Some phones have a separate “Roaming APN” or require the “APN type” to include “roaming”. Turn on data roaming in the main settings, and double-check with your carrier whether a dedicated APN is needed abroad.
